EU Commission Recognizes WOP’s Glass Laser Technology with Seal of Excellence

Workshop of Photonics (WOP), a laser micromachining company, has been awarded the prestigious Seal of Excellence by the European Commission for its advanced PULSE project.

This recognition highlights WOP’s capability to deliver deep-tech solutions for next-generation electronics manufacturing.

What the Seal of Excellence Validates

The Seal of Excellence is a quality label awarded following a rigorous evaluation by independent international experts. For WOP and its partners, this recognition serves as an objective validation of several key factors:

  • Market Relevance: It confirms that the PULSE project addresses an unmet industrial need with a highly competitive technological approach.
  • Technical Capability: The award reflects the qualifications of WOP’s engineering and research teams to develop commercially viable, scalable innovations.
  • Proven Track Record: It demonstrates WOP’s capability to meet the strict criteria of Horizon Europe proposals, establishing the company as a qualified and reliable partner for international consortiums.
  • Problem-Solving: WOP possesses the verified technical framework required to address complex, custom manufacturing challenges from enterprise clients.

PULSE Solution for the Next-Gen Computing Bottleneck

Artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing demands very high processing power. And traditional microchip packaging materials, such as organic and plastic substrates, are reaching their physical limits due to severe overheating and stability issues. Thus, companies are moving to glass-core substrates to solve the issues.

WOP’s PULSE (Primary Unit for Laser Structuring and Etching) project offers a proprietary two-step technology called Selective Laser Etching (SLE) that can create holes in glass with perfect quality, near-zero defects, and at massive industrial speeds – the advanced solution for Through-Glass Vias (TGVs) micromachining.

SLE technology

Using our proprietary two-step Selective Laser Etching (SLE) technology, we achieve microscopic precision:

  1. Laser Modification: A ultra-short pulse laser modifies the internal structure of the glass exactly where connections are needed.
  2. Chemical Etching: A specialized liquid dissolves the laser-modified tracks rapidly, leaving perfectly smooth holes without causing micro-cracks.

These microscopic holes function as vertical wires, connecting different layers of a microchip to enable faster and more efficient data flow.

Looking Forward: From Lab to Industrial Reality

WOP focuses on scaling existing FemtoTGV technology into a high-performance solution for large format glass panels.

By optimizing speed and ensuring zero defects, WOP bridges the gap between laboratory precision and high industrial demand, strengthening the European semiconductor supply chain.
